Mum explains half price toy hack that helps her bag cheap Christmas presents

A mum has explained how she uses pre-Black Friday deals to bag half price Christmas presents.

Sara Phillips, 36, from Bristol, says she has saved £183 on toys worth £372 for her two-year-old daughter Bella.

The money-savvy mum says she usually waits until December to purchase her Christmas presents but wanted to be more organised this year due to the supply chain shortages.

Toy chains have started urging parents to shop early this year to avoid disappointment come December.

Sara said she started typing in “pre-Black Friday” and was surprised by how many retailers were already offering discounts.

It isn’t always a case of spotting official pre-Black Friday sales but more finding the retailers that are launching discounts right now.

Online shops where Sara has been able to nab a bargain include Very.co.uk and Amazon.

Her top toys include a Sylvanian Families Log Cabin Gift Set for £34.99 instead of £69.98 and a Barbie cash register for £10 instead of £18.

Speaking to Lovethesales.com, Sara, who works as a provision officer, said: “Shops seem to bring out new ‘must-have’ toys every Christmas and they are always very expensive.

“I know so many parents who struggle to afford the latest toys for their kids, especially in the run-up to Christmas.

“However, you can save so much on gifts if you shop the way I did.”

Sara says she wasn’t willing to risk the toy she wanted being out of stock on Black Friday so decided to buy them now.

It is impossible to say whether these items will eventually be cheaper when Black Friday arrives on November 26.

But previous research from PriceSpy has actually shown how Black Friday deals aren’t actually always the real deal – with some items being cheaper in the run up.

The best way to make sure you’re paying the best price is to use a price tracker tool online to compare prices.

Sara said: “There is no way I would’ve saved nearly £200 on toys in the run-up to Christmas, and I wasn’t going to take the risk of them being out of stock by Black Friday.

“Finding pre-Black Friday sales was like having my own mini Black Friday. This is definitely my biggest money-saving Christmas haul to date.”

Her top tips for other parents include being organised and start checking prices for toys now to avoid forking out more than you need in December.

Commenting on Sara’s bargains, Stuart McClure, co-founder of Lovethesales.com said: “We have been tracking a flurry of retailers advertising pre-Black Friday deals in October.

“In fact, there are 21% more online retailers offering Black Friday discounts now, than in October last year.

“Retailers will be worried about supply chain disruptions around the busy periods of November and December and are offering discounts now to not lose out in the Holiday shopping rush.”
